Abstract Layers: Painting and Postcard Creations - a creative abstract painting workshop with collage | Create Unique Art | Create Collage | Learn to Collage

Discover how a single painting can inspire three works of art

This is something a little different - a workshop idea that was suggested to me by a lovely lady who has been to both my collage with words workshop and my intuitive abstract painting workshop because there was a creative process I had been doing which she really wanted to try. That process was using the masking tape which I use whilst making my paintings to make postcard size art!

In both my workshops I use masking tape either around the edge or through the middle of my paintings – the tape is painted over as part of the painting process and then removed to reveal a crisp white line around the edge of the painting. I realised quite early on that the tape which could just be discarded was also quite beautiful – it gave a hint to the painting I had made but also in its own right was a creation itself. I started using the tape in my sketchbook and then later progressed to sticking the tape sections onto a blank postcard and working back into them to create another piece of art. These postcards have become a fun extension to my painting process – they incorporate painting, collage and mixed media and I think the most fun part is that because the tape is in sections you don’t really know how each part will interact with another and that gives this process a great element of surprise. Do you like the sound of this?

In this 4 hour workshop you will learn how to create an abstract painting then use the masking tape on your painting to create 2 further works of art in the form of postcards. These A6 postcards are made from 350gsm watercolour paper and handmade in the UK.

I will gently guide you through a process where you create abstract paintings in an intuitive way - focusing on creating texture and mark making whilst finding out which colours you are drawn to. You will have the opportunity to try lots of tools during this workshop from brushes, palette knives, paint pens and mark making equipment and of course collage. I demonstrate and paint along with you during the workshop so that you feel comfortable and at ease. I truly believe we are all born creative and I hope this workshop will help you to get back in touch with your creative self once again

The workshop will take place in my studio which is in my house, and I want you to feel at home as soon as you step through my front door which I why I make homemade lemon drizzle cake served on vintage plates for you to enjoy with your tea or coffee. The workshop will take place whilst listening to relaxing, calming music which makes the perfect environment for you to relax and enjoy being creative.

You do not need to have any experience, in fact most people who come along have not painted since school or for a very long time. My workshop will give you an opportunity to try a new skill or a new way of painting and help you find your creative happy place. However experienced or inexperienced you are, I know you will enjoy these 4 hours of creativity.

This workshop is more than showing you a process, I want you to feel at home, relaxed, and for you to see how creativity can nourish your soul.

Why not bring a friend or family member and share the experience? Alternatively, if you come alone, you will get to meet other likeminded people - I always love how well everyone gets along.
